This weekend the F1 circus rolls into Belgium and heads to the challenging Spa-Francorchamps circuit. Spa is now not only known as an incredibly exciting race circuit but as the birthplace of Michael Schumacher’s Formula One career driving for the 7-Up Jordan team led by the ebullient Eddie Jordan.
I was fortunate to be a member of the Jordan team on that memorable weekend, Michael’s opportunity brought about by the local hero Bertrand Gachot having a little problem in London whereby he had to miss the race.
The Jordan team and Michael’s weekend began a few days earlier on the South Circuit at Silverstone whereby Michael was totally at home in the Gary Anderrson designed 191.
The rest is history, who would have believed that Michael would go forth and rule Formula One for many a year with his total dedication and brilliance!
I will never forget those few days back in 1991 and the excitement to follow in Monza, I had the pleasure of driving the Ferrari lawyer to the Villa d’Este on the evening of the race weekend whereby he brokered a deal between Jordan and Benetton as Roberto Moreno moved to Jordan and Michael Schumacher moved over to Benetton.
Amazing what a taxi ride led to!!
