Description

Ayrton Senna Marlboro McLaren Honda MP4/4, 1:1 replica steering wheel

Ayrton Senna joined the McLaren team in 1988 from Team Lotus alongside established team mate Alain Prost. Their rivalry would subsequently define an era of Formula 1.

Senna won his first World Championship title that season, in the legendary Marlboro McLaren Honda MP4/4 that dominated to win 15 out of 16 races. The design team was led by Steve Nichols, under Gordon Murray alongside Neil Oatley, whilst Honda’s RA168E 1.5 V6 Turbo was developed by Osamu Goto.

Senna’s steering wheel was produced by Personal / NARDI of Italy to his preferred diameter but had to be modified with a “flat top” to pass the FiA strict technical regulations ensuring that there were no protrusions beyond a straight line test plane between the front of the cockpit and the low line roll hoop of the MP4/4.

After Senna’s passing, Personal produced a limited number of exact replicas of Ayrton’s steering wheel as collector pieces, most of which were sold into Japan. This example is now offered for sale with Radio and Boost buttons, correct black suede trim with white stitching and a collector’s plaque to accompany this superb item.
