After the sea of orange smoke and celebration scenes at Zandvoort last weekend following what Max described as a “simply lovely” home win, the F1 circus heads to the wonderful temple of speed in the royal park at Monza, outside of Milan.
Monza holds a special place for many drivers. Who can forget Pierre Gasly’s unexpected maiden win last year, or Charles Leclerc’s victory in front of the Tifosi and Sebastian Vettel’s maiden win in the rain in 2008? The circuit oozes history – both triumph and tragedy – in equal measure. The fatalities of Petersen in 1978, Rindt in 1970 and Von Trips in 1961 were undoubted lows, whilst the historic 1-2 for Ferrari in 1988 a week after the death of Enzo was the only non-McLaren victory that year.
The 2022 driver lineup now appears to be largely resolved with Bottas to Alfa Romeo and George Russell to AMG Mercedes.
This week we showcase a Valtteri Bottas racesuit direct from Williams and a superbly presented original carbon fibre dashboard from the 1993 M193 Minardi – the car that somersaulted over the Monza finishing line in 1993.
For many, Monza translates to Ferrari. We have a wonderful set of presentation paperweights that were never publicly available for sale as a set. They celebrate five consecutive F1 Constructors World Championship titles from 1999 – 2003. We also offer a 2011 Ferrari Christmas card and 2011 pit lane guide, both hand-signed by Fernando Alonso.
Also from Ferrari, we offer a 1985 MOMO presentation steering wheel as used by Stefan Johanssen and Michele Alboreto as well as a wonderful invitation from Piero Ferrari to the Gestione Sportiva event at Maranello in 1989, hand signed by Alain Prost, Nigel Mansell and Gerhard Berger as well as Mr Ferrari himself.
From our historics section, we have a wonderful Nicholas Watts limited edition print of Sir Stirling Moss and Tony Brooks at speed at Monza in the Vanwalls. This superb framed image is hand-signed by the late Moss as well as Brooks and the Vanwall designer, Frank Costin.
